Micro-needling: The Secret Behind Flawless Skin

July 21, 2018

There’s always that one friend that seems to know everything about skincare and it shows. Despite her age, her skin always looks flawless, poreless and radiant even without a stich of make-up. She has perfected the ‘I woke up like this’ look despite having two kids and a full-time job.

Want to know what her secret is? It’s micro-needling, an innovative aesthetic treatment that effectively remodels and rejuvenates the skin. It’s quick and requires little to no downtime which is why this is her number one go-to treatment. Let’s explain what micro-needling is and how it works.

What is Micro-needling?

Also known as collagen induction therapy, micro-needling is an aesthetic treatment that has transformed the way we treat skin that has been affected by scarring, skin ageing, uneven texture and hydration. A micro-needling pen is evenly moved or stamped over the affected area. The micro-needles pierce through the the skin to create tiny puncture ‘wounds’ in the epidermis and dermis.

How does it work?

Micro-needling has a dual effect – on the one hand, it creates small channels for active ingredient in serums to be better absorbed by the skin and thereby improving hydration and rejuvenation. While on the other hand, the tiny puncture sites are registered as a skin injury by the body and it responds with an acute inflammatory response. White blood cells containing oxygen are rushed to the wound sites, human growth hormone (HGH) is released and new skin cells are made by the surrounding cells in order to repair the ‘wound’.

All of this might sound extremely invasive, but it’s something that naturally happens every second of the day in our body. Our skin is designed to regenerate itself, it sometimes just needs a bit of a kickstart. Once the repair of the puncture wounds is induced the remodelling of the skin starts and healthy normal skin cells along with collagen and elastin are formed.

Why does Micro-needling work?

“This treatment allows us to get rid of old, damaged cells and tissue and accelerate the formation of new healthy skin, collagen and elastin. This is crucial for anti-ageing, scar treatment, burn scars and stretch mark removal among other things”, explains aesthetic therapist Tracy Cheketri at Aurora Medical Aesthetics Centre. She goes on to explain that by creating the tiny puncture holes in the skin, it will also improve product penetration. “Professional serums and platelet-rich plasma are often ‘needled’ into the skin making the treatment even more effective and speeding up recovery time.” Patients will also find that their at-home skin care products are more effective after a micro-needling treatment.

Doubling up the results

At Aurora Medical Aesthetics Centre, we incorporate two powerful serums to improve the results of the micro-needling treatment. The Essel DNA EPINEW Stem Cell Elixir and Aesthet Recovery Serum. The DNA EPINEW Stem Cell Elixir uses plant-derived stem cells to help boost the skin’s regenerative capacity, increase healthy skin cell turnover and improve skin firmness and density.

The Aesthet Recovery Serum is an advanced skin rejuvenating serum formulated with growth factors and peptides to speed up the recovery of dry, irritated and damaged skin. It’s ideal for patients who have undergone plastic surgery and non-invasive aesthetic procedures such as chemical and laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion and micro-needling.

Both of these serums can be incorporated in your daily at-home skin care regimen.

In celebration of Women’s Month, Aurora Medical Aesthetics Centre will be running a promotion on our micro-needling treatment. Purchase 1 Micro-needling treatment PLUS 1 Essel DNA EPINEW Stem Cell Elixir Serum for R1590 AND receive 1 FREE Essel Aesthet Recovery Serum to the value of R490.
